The Gambia is a friendly and accessible West African country, absolutely teeming with rare and exotic birds, drawn to the fertile areas along the Gambia River and on the coast. See photos
and comments from some of my clients over the years. |

Let me take you on fascinating birdwatching or tourist trips, throughout the length and breadth of my country,
at very reasonable cost. I am a member of the RSPB and WABSA and I am listed in the Bradt
Guide to The Gambia and feaured in Birding the Gambia. I'm based near the Kombo Beach Hotel. I offer small group / bespoke guiding services.
We can visit coastal areas such as: Koto
Stream, Cape Creek and Crocodile Pool, Bund road, the Lamin
rice fields, Yundum, Tanji Nature Reserve and the Faraba
Banta Bush Track Bird Reserve, Brufut forest, Marakissa
rice fields, Pirang Fish Ponds or the Abuko Nature Reserve.
I can also arrange day trips to the Fathala Wildlife Reserve in Senegal.
If you have a few days to spare there are
more exotic species further up
country: Tendaba Camp, Jangjangbureh (Georgetown) or Basse Santa
Su. This would involve 1-3 nights (2-4 days). The cost would include accommodation,
creek trip at Tendaba, guiding and transport.
New! Would you like to stay at peaceful River-Lodges and see Hippos, Chimpanzees, Pelicans and Ancient Stone Circles? For example I can take you on a 2 night (3 day) trip to Bintang Bolong and Kuntaur on the Gambia River. See Hippos and Stone Circles for a taste of this fine trip.

" I went to The Gambia for the first time in January 2026, me for the birding, my husband for the sun. Looking for a bird guide, my husband came across Modou’s website so I sent him a WhatsApp message. He called me straight back and after chatting for a while, I knew he was the guide I wanted. I had 10 half days with him. We saw all my target birds and so many more. Modou could see birds when I just saw branches until he pointed them out. His knowledge and ability to find birds was amazing, so much so, that we have booked Modou again when we return next year. " Emma Braden, UK
" My wife and I have been to The Gambia four times and always had Modou as our bird guide, he has always turned up on time and is one of the most trustworthy people I have ever met. If anybody is going to The Gambia on a birdwatching holiday they can’t go far wrong by booking Modou Barry. He is a fantastic bird guide, and is based in the Combo Beach Hotel. "

" My husband and I took a trip to The Gambia in Feb 2022 and pre-booked Modou by email for 2 days' birding. . . . We visited places we had never been before and saw our target birds including, owls, raptors, nightjar (very close views) and Violet Turaco. Modou is an excellent guide, he has a vast knowledge regarding birds, the best places to spot them, he is polite, helpful, and has a good sense of humour. His drivers were equally friendly and enthusiastic. We would highly recommend Modou, the perfect bird guide. " Diane Daniels and Phil Scott, Kent, UK
